Help for Heroes - Reading Transport's Charity of the Year 2010

Our Charity of the Year is a young charity with a big cause.

Here is a bit more about their current appeal and what their fundraising goes toward...
Personnel Recovery Centres

Personnel Recovery Centres will provide a “launchpad” to life for seriously wounded or long term sick service personnel, supporting them as they make the transition to a fulfilling future

Service personnel who are wounded in the service of their country currently receive excellent medical care, notably the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine (RCDM) and the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre (DMRC).  However it is once the soldier has stopped being an ‘inpatient’ that problems can arise.

Most wounded service personnel are able to return to their homes, but not all families can provide the level of support, supervision and care needed to help someone who has a serious injury. Although it is hoped that every member of the services wounded in the service of their country will be able to return to duty, there will be many who leave the services. It is important that they receive assistance and guidance in this, enabling them to make a smooth transition to a skilled and supported civilian life.

We spend every penny possible on making grants that aim to provide practical, direct support for our wounded. The grants that we have made so far are outlined in the table below with further information about each grant available beneath the table.

Our current focus is for grants to create a series of regional Recovery Houses to be built across the UK and serve as the last stage of rehabilitation before a serviceman, or woman, returns to their unit or transits back into civilian life. Our current target for this is to raise £20 million by October 2010 and while the support has been amazing, there is still a way to go.

We do, of course, have running costs but for our first year we kept these so low that 98p from every £1 donated was available for grants and we aim to continue operating at a similar level.
